Recommendations to Avoid Loss of Time.

On the morning of January 9, 2025, the Municipal Government of Puerto Vallarta announced on its Social Networks that starting at 6 am it would close the Avenida México road, which is a key route to connect Ixtapa with Puerto Vallarta.

The repair that the Municipal Government made consisted of changing the rain drain grates.

This action caused traffic chaos that lasted all morning and afternoon, causing real traffic jams on the main avenue.

If you find yourself in traffic chaos again in Puerto Vallarta due to the closure of one of the main transit routes, here are some practical suggestions that can help you handle the situation in the best possible way:

  1. Check Real-Time Traffic Apps

● Use apps like Google Maps or Waze to get alternative routes and know the estimated traffic time. ● These tools also inform you about the estimated opening time of the closed street, if the information is available.

         2. Take Alternate Routes

● Although Puerto Vallarta has few main avenues, there are secondary streets or access roads through residential areas that could help you avoid the most affected area.

● If you are familiar with local neighborhoods such as Fluvial Vallarta or Versalles, you can use them as alternate routes.

         3. Avoid Rush Hours

● Whenever possible, plan your trips outside of peak traffic hours, such as between 7-9 a.m. and 5-8 p.m.

           4. Alternative Transportation

● Consider using bicycles, motorcycles, or even walking if distance allows.

● Public transportation, such as city buses, can use detours planned by the authorities.

         5. Coordinate Your Tasks or Appointments

● Try to group your activities to reduce the number of trips needed during the day.

● If you have important appointments, please let us know in advance that you may be late due to congestion.

        6. Stay Calm and Be Patient

● Irritation only makes the experience worse; bring music, podcasts, or audiobooks to pass the time faster.

● Bring water and a light snack if you expect to be in the car for a long time.

         7. Cooperate with Authorities

● If traffic is managed by traffic police, follow their directions. They are often present to speed up the flow at critical detours or intersections.

        8. Check Local News

● Listen to radio stations or check social media to stay informed about route changes or the progress of maintenance work.

         9. Remote or Delayed Work

● If you have the option to work from home or adjust your schedule, do so while traffic chaos persists.

        10. Avoid Blocking Intersections

● Help other drivers by respecting signs and avoiding getting stuck in an intersection, as this makes the situation worse for everyone.

         11. Report Problems

● If you notice serious problems, such as missing signage at detours, report it to the Municipal Traffic Department so that action can be taken.

          12. Plan Departures in Advance

● If you know that there will be events or closures scheduled, plan your itinerary days in advance to avoid unforeseen events.

If traffic chaos is frequent due to prolonged construction, consider establishing alternative regular routes or encouraging the use of public transportation to reduce the impact on traffic congestion in the area.
