A Vision by Architect Héctor Cristóbal Zúñiga

Puerto Vallarta has undergone a visual transformation as a tourist destination, evolving in architecture from its early days as a fishing village to its present form, which has had a significant social and economic impact both locally and internationally. It is truly magnificent to behold the historic center of Puerto Vallarta and stroll along the Marina Vallarta boardwalk with all the distinctive features that define its development and typical architecture, such as the sloping roofs and clay tiles. Much of this architecture was a fusion of beachside aesthetics with mountainous influences. Engineers like Guillermo Wulff Sein and Fernando Romero added a unique touch to the streets of this beautiful tourist destination.

With the architectural style that developed prior, we can appreciate the blended styles that have contributed to what is known as the "Vallarta Style." There is ongoing debate as to whether this designation accurately captures its essence. In the evolutionary process of the constructions that have given rise to the city's beauty, it is important to recognize the style we are discussing so that it does not get lost in the evolution driven by modernity, practicality, marketable elements, and the characteristics that define architectural modernity.

Undoubtedly, architecture has a different mission. It does not aim to merely preserve structures; instead, it seeks evolution, originality, and beauty while retaining the local identity. It is fascinating to witness the contrasts of nature's lush greenery against the reddish hues of awnings and porthole windows on a building. To see a structure with ample windows, extensive use of glass, devoid of clay tiles or Talavera ceramics is equally captivating. Embracing the architectural style of the 1970s, which is rich in its natural surroundings and cultural identity, would be a splendid endeavor in contemporary times.
